Title: WI-FI internet in TUP-V
Description: Is 20 php per hour OK or just too tight?

The KG - July 14, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
TUP-V now has wireless internet connection via wi-fi and charges P20 per hour for students who want to avail. give a reaction.

rommelpc - July 15, 2005 04:16 AM (GMT)
This is great news to hear that TUP-V has already a wireless internet connection via wi-fi available to students. I think the P20 fee is reasonable. But I also think that majority of the students don't have wireless notebook PCs yet so this might just as well be for the privileged few.

LanFear - July 15, 2005 02:36 PM (GMT)
Wi-Fi? What for? The Staff must realize that students there can't afford to have a notebook, that's why they studied there in the first place.

The KG - July 15, 2005 03:25 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, maybe the school has laptops provided inside the computer room for use by the students. Im not sure about this Wi-Fi thing, but I think PCs are capable of Wi-Fi as long as you have the right hardware.

A 20-peso per hour charge is OK with me...gabayad ta gani sang una sa dial up tag 35 ang oras sa Dags, madumduman ko sang una, ang sukot sa imo per minute pa na...tapos kung may kwaki gani, lets say 35.50 imo balayran...ikaw pa ya ayuon sang tag iya na 36 nalang imo blayran...hahahah...

20 php/hour = sulit

Steven.Rivera - July 16, 2005 03:48 AM (GMT)
tapos diin abi makadto ang kwarta? I think it should be free.... dira naman na masugod ang corruption.....

roadkill - July 16, 2005 06:20 AM (GMT)
I would like to know how they came up with the idea of "Wi-fying" Tup V. I would then think that majority of the students have pda's or notebooks? Why implement such? I know there are good reasons behind but it doesn't justify any demand.

In Cebu, wi-fi are a commonplace in cafe's(kapehan), Rustan's, Waterfront, and sometime this or next quarter, the ports will also have it's own hotspot. This would obviously justify demands since alot of professionals prefer mobility with their communications. Med-Reps get regular updates on their PDA's via wi-fi of who among their competitors are making the most visitation and sales(whatever they call it) with doctors. Vital for their business, i must say! Stockmarket updates become available on your palm(hehe). The list goes a long long way but please, give light on this matter why TUP V installed wi-fi and charge 20 pesos per hour. Is it for the students? or was it mainly aimed to give wireless connection among faculty/employees then including the students were just condiments of the whole sandwich?

Who proposed wi-fi for tupv?
What are their objectives?

Poksie - July 22, 2005 12:09 PM (GMT)

I think the price is reasonable, but it doesn't help any of the students. May be they just provide free internet use on a regular pc's, I believe it would be of great help.

Lemme answer your enquiry Roadkill....

Firstly, i guess those who proposed the wi-fi are the student themselves...Remember students are info and tech savvy *ben wallace

Objectives, the main objective of the the wi-fi is to have the students be aware of what the current technology can offer to them. It wiould be shame kun wala guid sila nabal an kun puro theory na lng. You were an ECE student so you should have known that. You should be proud pa gani nga may Wi-fi environment na ta.

Ano ang pulos sg technological sa "TUP-Visayas" man kun wla ta teknolohiya?*mad

Just 2 cents of my thought. :thumb:

conzen - July 23, 2005 09:54 AM (GMT)
guys guys.... sorry i didn't clarify, i thought that the clause "charges P20 per hour for students who want to avail" would mean that TUPV already have a new internet lab that uses wi-fi connection. i didn't consider that the most common application for wifi is for notebook pcs. sorry gid.

the true matter is, TUP has a new internet lab beside the chem lab4. it uses wifi connection and offers computer units for rent at 20 pesos per hour. if you're a first year student, you pay i guess 180 pesos for internet fee and receives and internet card entitled for corresponding hours. for other years, you can purchase time codes at 20 per hour. daw basic system sang internet cafe.

i apologize for the mixed up info. i guess the question won't make it to the issue kay daw layo ang expected ko na response tungod kay wala ko na explain mayo. sorry liwat. hehe. *no

The KG - July 23, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
I think I was right about PCs being rigged with wi-fi tranceivers...ambot kung mo na twag...pero daw amo na ah...heheheh...sori di ko ECE, ME ko eh...hahah

Conzen, maybe you could still put this in the issue by filtering the comments that would fit the topic s Artisan...Anyway may mga comments man na daw sulod sa topic main...

Tsakto ko?!?!?

Confused!!!

Hahaha

roadkill - August 13, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
@Spat, we at tupv are definitely tech savvy, but can students afford pocket pc's? e-tablets? laptops? a few siguro, but it ain't feasible for tup-v to setup wi-fi for just 5-10 percent of the school's population...
it's always a LOSS to cater to a "commodity"[if such can be considered, else a caprice] of no demand at all!

... before we add strength to the term "teknolohikal na unibersidad", tane we must consider the financial situation of the school and its students.

glad u made it clear conzen:
yes wi-fi kamo, but minimal Area lang... siguro ara lang sa 10 meters to 15 meter radius. regular desktop pc's lang less the network cables.

confined lang sa gamay nga rum..

what i understood was wi-fi like in cebu as hotspots, ang coverage is like a regular cell site's coverage nga kilometrahe. inang makalakat lakat ka from one spot to another without losing connection, clean and crisp hand-off kung baga.

the wi-fi implementation lang siguro was to less complicate the cabling, cut costs on maintaining faulty wires, and use space efficiently.

SpaT - August 15, 2005 10:27 AM (GMT)
Having an WIFI environment is more better than nothin' at all, agree?

This is not about commodity, this is about the application of technology. We need this WIFI service in order to be at par with technology. We ain't sellin' business here right? Education is what our school offer. WIFI is a must, got my point? It is not a demand, it is needed to be studied and applied.

Anyway, the school will provide the hardwares and the students will just pay for the internet fees. Rich studes can bring their own PCs for their own conveniences and hook up with the wireless service.

Roadkill,

I do understand what you wanna say about this issue. I guess you were refering to the peripherals needed for the internet service right? Yes they are costly, we cannot do nothin' about it... *no

iceman - September 25, 2005 01:23 PM (GMT)
IMHO, it should be free. In TUP-V the rich and the poor should be on equal terms right? Paano ang wala 20 petots? There are a lot of things that must be learn aside from these networking environment thing. Software development for automating equipments are a good example. During our time, it was but a dream. Q lang? Are microporcessor programmers both hardware and software available on the school?

conzen - October 5, 2005 09:03 AM (GMT)
sorry i haven't been here for quite a while, i don't have any excuse. i guess i felt guilty that the article didn't make it to the issue. we dropped some articles and i didn't really push for this one coz other guys got great stuff too, and i already had 2 to be published so i kept quiet. errr.....

the computers are still wired to the server, only the server uses wifi for faster connection. which some may react "what's the wi-fi for?". its just for faster connection rather than using dsl. another issue is upcoming this october, hope i can push for this but i can't give high hopes, thanks for the answers guys, really appreciate it...

i beg to disagree that using wifi connection to server is a more faster connection than that of wired... Please consider your connection again.

Max speed outputs:

Wifi right now is 54 Mbps

Wired/LAN ethrenetcable is 100Mbps
(PS there is already an 1000Mbps gigaethernet LAN cable and connector available)

Please review and check...

rastaman™ - November 26, 2006 11:10 AM (GMT)
Wi-fi na to gali gamit nyo sang pagbisita ko to sang nagligad?

grabe man to kadugay!?!

pentium 10!!

10 mins antis mag-open..

pati si Sir Bonache gatawa sang kahinay sang server!!!

basi tood sa connection na Conzen?

Jerim - November 26, 2006 01:00 PM (GMT)
maski naka wi-fi kung ang internet connection mo dial-up, it won't go faster than 56kbps.

ang wi-fi gamit lng na siya, baylo sa cable. so maski may capacity ang wifi mo up to 120Mbps kung ang dsl mo is 300kbps lng, asta lng ka diyapon sa 300kbps.. ti kung damo kamo ga share sa sina nga bandwidth, mas hinay pa gid e.

Ang cable ko 100Mbps, ang wifi ko 11Mbps, pero ang subscription namon is 6Mbps lng.. pero kung check ko ang bandwidth speed, mayo na maka 500kbps ko... ok na sa dial-up sang una nga 32kbps hehehe...

zephyr - December 21, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
dapat free wifi nalang...

tapos may log-in na nalng nga gamiton sa ila notebook..
pwede man access via mac..
may server lang nga mahandle sang MAC list.. dibala..

or kung ma charge man gid.. sa tuition nalang,..

those that will pay sa tuition nila.. hatagan sang log-in..
or iregister ang MAC sang notebook nila..

di bala.. mas okay na..
its going to be an easier way to access to the wifi connection..
it would look open to all..

pero secured xa nga network..
:chuck:

Jerim - December 21, 2007 03:10 AM (GMT)
yeah.. this should be free... subscribe na lng ang school sa smart bro.. tag 900 pesos lng... tapos ma-donate na lng ang mga alumni mga pulo ka access point hehehe.. di man na guro ka ubos 20,000 pesos?

:P

i agree...

wifi connection is not faster than ethernet...

on record 40 gigabits-per-second is the fastest wired connection

wifi is not that dependable either..
coz eventhough they say its fast...
they also have to consider throughput speed and bandwidth,.... a
so on and so forth..

nothing beats wired connection..

siguro kung networking lang.. (office or building)
wifi is good.. but wifi for the servers.. not that good..

zephyr - December 21, 2007 03:15 AM (GMT)
ginpalakat lang ko sang tup.. nag wireless na sila dayun....waaaaaaa

espatepeppen - December 22, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
kun campus-type lng na wifi LAN, madamo na nga mga madasig nga Access points/ routers equipments nga available on the market.

Now the real issue we are raising here is the internet connectivity. Kay man ka slow man gyapon ang internet connection/broadband sa Talisay.Kag isa pa mahal man gyapon ang bayad sa internet line access.

babylexei - January 11, 2008 07:10 AM (GMT)
ano galeh ISP ta dra??

smart bro?? (kay may smart tower kita dra)

sa akon lang, sa mga nag graduate sa TUP 4 or 5(even 2-3 years) years ago, di nata kahambal if we need a wifi internet connection sa TUP, kay wala ta to, last time i went sa TUP si Sir Rufin my laptop na, something which he could live without sang una. pero if papilion ko, maayo gid na may wifi. kay damo naman skwelahan subong ang may wifi...

if tanawon mo sa presentation(PPT) you'll see what I mean.

Rostan - May 26, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
well..... ok lang ina if the "students" knew their basics and derivations...... more often students only memorize the "readily available" formula without knowing how to get it...

niways.... back to the topic... is wifi access for free sa TUPV?.. :D
