Title: Mambukal Eyed For Mini-hydro Power Plant

Mambukal eyed for mini-hydro power plant

THE famous Mambukal Resort in barangay Minoyan, Murcia in central Negros is being eyed as site for a mini-hydro power plant.

Lawyer Jose Ma. Valencia, the Capitol's chief of staff said, the power plant will be funded through a grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The project is estimated to cost about P9,980,000.00. This includes the resort's first falls and the boating lagoon area.

Valencia said that as per study, the first falls in Mambukal can produce as much as 102 kilowatts (kW) of power while the boating lagoon is expected to generate about 42 kW.

If realized, Mambukal would have a total of 144-kW independent power production, enough to supply the power needs of the entire mountain resort and even the adjacent localities, Valencia said.

"This would also mean million of pesos in savings and income for the province," he added.

This as Valencia said that based on initial computation, the province could save at least P1,105,120 in electrical bill and could also earn about P1,039,328 in excess energy to be supplied to the neighboring places in Mambukal.

Aside from Mambukal, two more sites in the province are also being eyed to host additional mini-hydro plants.

Barangay Hiyang-Hiyang in Cadiz City in northern Negros is one of those being targeted. The other one is somewhere in southern Negros, Valencia said.

"What we are looking is simply a place with abundant water supply and not yet energized," he said.

At present, Valencia said ADB, in partnership with the Japan Fund Poverty Reduction (JFPR), has already installed three mini-hydro power plants in northern Negros, which are now ready for operation.

The three are located in sitio Balea, barangay Lagaan, Calatrava town; Sipaway island, San Carlos City and sitio Vergara-Magtuod, barangay Bug-ang in Toboso town.

Residents in these areas could also avail of P5,000 loan per household, payable in staggered basis. Loan will be extended by ABD through the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation Inc. (NWTFI).

Valencia, however, explained that mini-hydro power plants in Calatrava, San Carlos, Toboso and those being proposed in Mambukal, Hiyang-Hiyang and another one in the south, are totally different from the one being eyed in Bago City by Alto Corporation, and even those being planned in the Ilog-Hilabangan river in Kabankalan City and Binalbagan river in Binalbagan town. The one being eyed in Bago City is a macro-hydro power plant.

He said that according to ADB, Negros has a lot of potential in terms of hydro power project, considering its seven large rivers.

Plans to put up more mini and macro hydro plants in the province won't also be a hindrance to the soon-to-be implemented geothermal exploration of the Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) inside the Mt. Kanlaon buffer zone, Valencia clarified.

"Instead, these will augment PNOC-EDC's geothermal power production aimed at ensuring a stable power supply in Negros Island come 2010." (Erwin Ambo Delilan)

if my computations are right, 144KW is only about 650Amps, i guess just right to supply for the resort itself... kung may spare capacity man is not adequate to supply for 20 average household...

still, this is a good news......

though...

PNOC, as far as i know is not extracting adequate steam as what the study and feasibility says.... roughtly about 5-10% if i recall it right....

good strategy ina..bisan para lang sa local consumption nila

Dapat amu na ang mga ginapinsar sang mga politicians ta on how they can use our resources nga ara lang makit-an sa palibut ta....

Powerwise.....

Rostan - May 30, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
wala ako idea pero IF and only IF there are adequate steam t be extracted as what the study says, pila ang cost of powerplant?....

my assumptions are:

asuming 12 hours consumption of the 144KW effective, 80% utilization, ang power bills will only be about PhP150,000 to PhP200,000 per month, equivalent to about ~2M per year... with this data, pila ang turbine, generator transmission, etc?... ~10MPhP

in effect, pila ka years ang ROI????.... 5 years...

wala ta data pero knowing that PNOC itself only produces 5-10% (if this is correct???) of the rated capacity, medyo alarming na ina kay indi maka extract enough steam EVEN ang PNOC... how much more ang "small" power plant?...

not to argue on this topic but its a good exercise and sharing na rin cguro.... having something new and great is NOT ALWAYS good... we have to consider and ROI (return of investment) if indeed madayun....

5 years of ROI is generally fair for capital projects.... ASSUMING they can extract adequate steam as forecasted....if not.... this 10M allocation which is being anually increased by interest will be thrown to garbage.... :thumb:

my thoughts lang ah....

Mig, ma comment lang ko.

im with you sa imo nga assumptions and computation but we are speaking about a mini - hydro-electric power plant not a geothermal power plant.

Anyway if that project will be realized then at least may ibalik sila sa tawo. di nila pagkawaton deretso,...
hehehheheheh

Hydro Power Plant migo Rostan ... inde Geothermal ...

dakpan ka gid ni migo Escobia ... hehe ... :naughty:

the project is Feasible kun modularized lang ang Equipments nga gamiton ...

which means i-salpak na lang tungod kay pre-computed na ang tanan nga capacity kag output power ...

dason i-revise na lang ang transmission kag distribution lines ...

that's good news tungod mangin self-sufficient na ang resort ...

kag ang ila consumption at present ma-divert na sa mga pamalay kag iban pa nga consumers ...

nice info migo Chram! :smoke

hehehehe... dakpa gid ako pero samething mig... i remember 10 years ago damu damu pa tubig ang naga gwa sa mambucal 7th falls..... lastyear when we wet back.... nag dyutay na... same philosophy as the steam extraction......

where the hell will they get that abundant supply of water?.... indi lang tani maging one-time project ia kag maging white elephant......

basi kung makakuha ka presentation material nila kag chematics, daw interesado ko nga makita ang ila technical paper....

basi may presentation material kamu da bala about sang project para ma criticize ta... este matun-an ta man....

kadamu daan mga one-time projects ang gobyerno that later on, due to idiotic feasibility studies (i'm not talking about this project though, i meant generally), the project loaned by government, being paid by the people with interest later became WHITE ELEPHANTS.....

and to know that patung patung gali ang komisyun sang mga officials nga nag propose.....
